food allergy: An allergic reaction to proteins in food. Nuts, seafood, grains and dairy products are common food allergens.
hay fever: Also known as allergic rhinitis, hay fever is an allergic reaction to airborne plant pollen.
HEPA (hi-efficiency particulate air) filter: A highly effective form of air filter, capable of removing microscopic particles from the air.
histamine: A product of the body's immune response when a foreign object or allergen is detected. Histamine is the main cause of allergy symptoms.
hives: The sudden appearance of red patches or bumps on the skin in response to an allergen. Hives are itchy and swollen, and can be dangerous if the swelling affects areas such as the throat, mouth or nose. Also called urticaria.
hypoallergenic: Anything unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
immunogoblin: Another term for an antibody.
immediate hypersensitivity reaction: Another term for an allergic reaction.
immune system: The body's natural defense system, the immune system identifies foreign matter in the body and produces antibodies to combat the invading substance.
immunotherapy: Injections of allergens in order to increase a person's tolerance for the allergen. Immunotherapy does not cure allergies, but can reduce the allergic response. Commonly known as allergy shots.
inflammation: An immune system response caused in part by histamine, inflammation causes swelling, itchiness, heat and localized redness.
intrinsic asthma: Asthma that has no external cause.
